We were off to the reptile zoo today. This is the kind of things my DD and I love....hands on with the creepy crawlies! She was extremely bummed that they didn't have a tarantula that she could hold this year, but she did get to hold a huge scorpion. Of course I forgot to take a picture so you will just have to take our word for it. I did snap a few others tho...

Its been a long 24hours. DS started to suffer from the tummy bug last night and kept me up all night changing sheets and pj's. He was feeling a little better today, but has been a handful. Whining. Complaining. He wants water in a green cup but by the time I have brought it to him he now wants juice in a blue cup. Sigh. To top it off he locked me out of the house and himself in and I had to get a key from the landlord to open the door. When I got inside he bawled his eyes out cuz he knew he would be in trouble. Hopefully this is the last stunt of the day as it is very late and he just marched out of his room announcing, "Me done.", and expecting to stay out of bed. I'm not sure he realizes but it's mommy's turn to say....ME DONE!!!!

Just Another Day

I did lots of laundry, folding, sorting and putting away today.

Cat fur on the laundry? Are you talking to me? Ridiculous!

Then I had a nice long nap. The pain meds do make me sleepier (if that is possible). So I woke up starving and decided to cook some comfort food. Perogies with cheese, mushrooms from Blenheim and onions from Strathroy.

I uploaded this and then realized how disgusting orange food on a pink plate with a bright flash actually looked. You'll just have to trust me that it was very yummy!

Surprise

For a year this was my computer chair.

Then I upgraded and have spent the last few months on this chair. It was an improvement as it didn't have a solid wood seat.

Then I received a very big surprise.....a NEW CHAIR!!!!!! No more butt falling asleep. No more worries of piles later in life due to a wooden seat!!!! Thank you ladies It is so much appreciated!!!!!!!

Monster Princess Jam

Missing Harbles

Its official. The harbles have been removed and my boys are healing. They have forgiven but will not forget I am sure.

Here they are for the first time in the cat carrier wanting to go to the vet. Completely clueless at this point of what horror awaits them.

Home and resting. There was lots of resting. After arriving home they both sat across the room and gave me the stink eye. I had treats so it is all good now.

Feet and Stuff

I thought I would start by answering some questions I have been asked in the comments.

Yes DS takes many cars into the tub. So far I haven't had any rust. They do however get dried afterwards, used in playdough and moonsand so perhaps it just gets worn off!

Bathbrush. Yes you need one. Go with the natural bristles tho. You will not be sorry!

Color Dots for the bath can be found at XS Cargo for $3!

Moonsand isn't so bad at my house as I have linoleum everywhere and it just sweeps up. Of course now I have Sam to look after that for me!

Sam.....oh my sweet man!!! I have no idea how well a Roomba would work on carpet as I don't have any! It has gone around my house twice now, did an awesome job, and picked up all my cat fur too! It comes with a cleaning tool to remove hair from the brushes.

As for me, I am having a bad day. My lungs are killing me today and I am glad to be seeing the doc tomorrow. Here's a pic of swollen feet from the other day. This is called pitting edema. Many of us had this during pregnancy where your feet swell up so much they jiggle when you walk. Mine have started swelling to the point of barely being able to get my socks off and as of today I am starting to break blood vessels. So much fun!

Girls Night

This is probably a rather boring picture for today. It will hold good memories for me though. Today is the first time since I moved here that I ordered in! Its only been a year and a half. I told DD that I was going to order a pizza and her eyes bulged out of her head before she jumped for joy!! So we ate pizza, drank pop, watched Annie and cuddled. Good times!

I also discovered that my cats have the ability to work together to open a pizza box and steal the cheese off an entire slice. I am going to sleep soon if I could just get rid of the pizza and pop gut rot.....uggg!

The Lamp

Well here it is. I have very few things that I have dragged around for very long. Most things were lost a year ago. This is one of my favorite items and survived along with me! This is a pottery Lotte lamp made here in Canada complete with its original Bakelite lampshade. I found it in a dumpster behind a college and I can just imagine it having endured years in the teachers lounge. When you clear the 70's out of your space I win!!!!

I posted this and then realized I should have included something else in this picture to show off the size of this lamp....its 4' tall!

Gone Bananas

I stocked up on bananas this week. Since reading the book 'Banana' I have been passionate about enjoying my bananas. I know that shipping a fruit so far is bad for our environment but I also see the value in supporting the people growing the crops and the plants themselves. So for your enjoyment here are a bunch of organic bananas and a bunch of baby bananas. The organic bananas are only a few cents more then the regular. There is no difference in the amount of pesticides in the fruit you buy but where it does make a difference is to the environment and the workers who apply the massive amounts of the chemicals to the plants. The baby bananas are the perfect size for a kids lunch bag or snack. They taste much more like the bananas our parents ate (yes bananas have changed!). They are more dense with a stronger flavour but are creamier then the regular bananas. My favorite part is that the peels can look extremely bruised but the fruit inside rarely is, unlike the regular bananas that it the peel is bruised the fruit inside is almost inedible. Try some!!!

Moon Sand and Monster Trucks

DS loves his moon sand almost as much as his Monster Trucks.

He had to try out all these trucks tho to make sure the monster truck was the one he wanted to play with. He also likes to add the crayons like logs to drive over and pile into trucks and loaders.

It all makes him this happy. I think I should keep him away from Indigos pictures because I swear I have seen this face before!

I must have broken my own personal record today for walking barely anywhere and taking forever to do it. I walked for just under 5 hours. Before Lupus it would have been 2 hours max and I would have accomplished all sorts of stuff. Now I go s l o w. I stop to rest. I swear. My feet swelled to completely fill my boots. Gah.

One of the people I see on my walks is the crossing guards. Our crossing guards are older women who do it cuz they love it. This past month we had a guard have to go home because she was having a gallbladder attack. Seriously?! I wouldn't go to work in agony like that would you? I appreciate them so much. Some days they are the only adults I speak to! They can also recite the weather forecast, remember every child's name and teach them safety at the same time. I'd say that is not too shabby for someone we see for a few seconds everyday.

My Dogs

My poor feet. They never stop being sore these days. They make me walk funny, they swell everyday and I'd like to trade them in for a new pair. They are a whopping size 10 and are usually wrapped in some sort of wool sock. I haven't been able to let go of my addiction to wool work socks since I started wearing steel toed boots every day about 15 years ago. I still own the boots but rarely wear them now.

Luckily I have my trusty footstool to rest my poor dogs on. It was an auction find for $2 and I love it! I put a wooden place mat on it to use it as a coffee table too. The only downside is that the cats love the stool and it tends to collect cat fur almost as well as my wooly socks.

Flapjack and I had to go to the doctor today so we got a few other things done while we were downtown. First we stopped off at Clubman the barber on Frank St. for a haircut. There is no phone to make appointments, you show up and if he is busy you go to the white board at the back and write your name in the day and time you want to come back for an appointment. He gives the best little boy haircuts ever and I love supporting the community.

Then I thought I would visit Hinagal across the street at Under The Moon. She was AWOL but Flapjack had a great time with the toys anyway.

I also learned that her screen name is not pronounced hin as in shin but instead hin as in hiney ;) It was a good day out with my boy. There were no fits to take pictures of and he waited for me to catch up to him for the most part. He was so incredibly good even with two sore eyes and a UTI that I bought him a full size chocolate bar and let him eat the whole thing! I'm sure he was wondering who this strange woman was allowing him all that chocolate.

Lots of things annoy me. I could do a 365 blog just on things that irritate me. This is one that is an ongoing everyday kind of annoying one. I snapped this pic when I had arrived early to DD's school. Normally this entire street is diagonal parking for parents picking up their kids. This is early enough it hasn't filled up yet. You may think this is a snow removal beef as you can tell this sidewalk is never cleared well. Its not. I live in Canada and can manage to walk on well packed snow. My beef is with the cars that park here. Follow that sidewalk all the way to the car parked blocking the sidewalk. When we arrive there my three year old will have to pull his wagon out onto the road and walk behind parked cars as they don't give us any room on the sidewalk. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

DD came home extra hungry today from school. She started with a chopped red pepper and mini pitas with red pepper hummus to dip them in. Then a sliced apple. When I started worrying about her eating her dinner she asked if they could have popcorn instead......Oh alright! I recently acquired an old popcorn maker to rid our home of those nasty teflon encrusted microwave popcorn bags, and just happened to buy some loose popcorn today! Here is the result!

Not too shabby! The kids thought all the popping corn was hilarious and I can see this being a regular treat now. Just add some cartoons and.....

Mama has time to write her blog! Ohh and no dishes to wash. Its a shame that I really don't like popcorn all that much. I'm not a fan of the bits that get shoved into your teeth.

I can't wait for today to be over. I'm done. Finished. Totaled. I'm ready for bed, comfy pj's and a book. Here's this weeks reading material. I picked up Indigo Springs because of our friend Indigo, it practically jumped off the shelf at me. The Beyond Belief book was one that had been talked about, parenting without religion...I'll let you know how it is.

Here is the final straw tonight. Poor Wes has been begging to play in the snow all day. So I made his sister take him out. It lasted five mins until she drilled him with a chunk of ice, "But he said he wanted to have a snowball fight". Yeah he's three. He doesn't even know what that means. So needless to say there were tears, screaming and time outs and that was just me. Here's a picture of big sister in trouble......

I guarantee bedtime will be early tonight. Really early.

Snowpile

There was some snow relocated to my front lawn today. My DD has been begging to play on the giant snowbanks along the streets and I won't let her and I knew this would be a dream come true!

Then I realized they were digging down deep enough to also collect some grass and mud. The pile quickly became my worst nightmare as I imagined the muddy snowpants and mitts.

Oh well, you can't stop fun from happening especially if there is mud involved. Here they are enjoying their giant snowpile! Its bigger then it looks huh?

Cat Crapper

I know you are all excited to see this so here it is...my new cat crapper!

OK it isn't as fancy as Mamarazzi's but its new to me. (Yes, this is how exciting my life is, I'm excited about a new crapper.) This fab new model has a cover that is super easy to take on and off for cleaning (note the handle on top!), and it even has a plastic cat flap to help keep the smell in. I had to take off the flap tho cuz the cats wouldn't go in...but I'm hoping that once they get used to the new box I can put it on. I'd say the smell has been reduced by about 50% just from having the lid. As an added bonus is the litter doesn't get kicked out in every direction making me lose my mind stepping on little cat litter crunchies. It was worth every penny. I'll also throw in a cute picture of Ernie to make this post less creepy and full of poop.

ETA- I can't say cat flap without thinking of Lenny Henry...

I love the library and I am so happy my DD shares my addiction. Here is her 'hurry up and take the picture so I can get back to my games' face.

They have lots of educational games that she can't get enough of. We were having some mom and daughter time so she played while I browsed. I was looking through the new arrivals, and was rather disappointed. I said to the lady next to me, "Gawd its tough to find a good book". She gave me a dirty look, made a 'pffffft' noise, took the latest Jackie Collins book off the shelf and walked away. THAT is why I do not belong in Strathroy....nuff said.

Chair Design

This is one of DS's creations. Normally he likes to line things up, put them in order or end to end like a train. So this one caught my eye. Perhaps he has started to give things their own space....that concept may be a good thing! They are nicely displayed on my wooden chair of torture I have sat on for over a year at the computer. If a padded room is not available at least opt for the padded seat.

My DD wanted to have a princess dress up night and somehow wrangled her brother into going along with the plan. Once I could stop laughing long enough to hold the camera still I snapped this photo. Its a keeper.

Misson: Wooden item

This barely qualifies as wooden. I think this may be one of the ugliest pieces of furniture that I have ever owned although it may be debatable. I was at an auction (I LOVE auctions!), and I had just scored my couch and chair for $15. Yes $15! When this item came up for sale no one wanted it. Silence filled the room.....and I gave them $2...SOLD! It may be ugly but for $2 it is has been a great solid piece of furniture. It holds my tv up on top and the DVD player and all the kids movies behind the doors, and the drawers are filled with colouring books and crayons. It hides mega clutter and therefore is good. When I brought this pillar of ugliness home I sat it at the far end of the room and stared at it. Thats when I saw it. What I had missed all along. My new tv stand has breasts!!!!!! From that day forward I have never been able to look at it the same way again. Even my furniture has pancakes.....

Hand Drum

Yes yesterdays picture was of my hand drum. I made it two summers ago under the teachings of Mary Lou Smoke. It is a 12 sided drum, so made of 12 pieces of wood, rawhide, and artificial sinew. The wood for these drums needs to be sanded by hand, and rubbed with bear grease for protection. The rawhide is soaked and applied to the wooden frame wet, and then sewn by hand to pull it tight for drying. This one does have a dream catcher type background complete with bellybutton and umbilical cord. Each drum sounds as unique as its creator. Each piece was individually smudged during assembly and then activated, given its voice, by ceremony. It was a very moving experience as a group of women gave voice to their drums.

Here is Mary Lou singing the Water Song which we sang during our drum making. (This video does nothing for the sound of the drum tho thats gets lost in recording) My children love this song!!! Anytime we are doing a repetitive task this song appears to make the time pass. I can remember stringing electric fencing with my DD and singing at the top of our lungs out in the fields...and last week while doing dishes.

On our way to the library we came across a car parked on the sidewalk. It was at the corner of a street blocking both directions. What makes it worse was that this is a car belonging to a business. I have enough trouble getting around these days without having to lift children and wagons around cars on the sidewalk....GRRRRRR.

Squirrel Snack

River loves to hunt. She had never seen a squirrel before we moved here as the dogs had dispatched them all years ago. She is convinced she can catch a squirrel. Here she was this morning wishing those branches were a little stronger.....

At the other end of the spectrum DD celebrated her half birthday today. Children who have summer birthdays get to celebrate their half birthday at school instead. She proudly wore her crown everywhere today announcing to anyone who would listen that she is now five AND A HALF! Happy half birthday baby....

It was a good day to walk on the sidewalk in StrathVegas today. We were going to Vinny's to look for second hand snowpants. When Avery heard we were going there she said we had to bring the wagon "to bring home all the toys"....LOL!! She did get a new toy that she is proudly taking to Show and Share tomorrow but I'll save that pic for another day. Here's my girl marching on.... "C'mon Mom, you can do it. Green and Shiny

I thought I would try a 'mission' today and collected some green and shiny things in my world for you to see....

My coffeemaker is named Alice, she is a very good friend. Her clock is green and shiny.

The canola oil in a spray can I bought when I couldn't find any WD40 has a green shiny lid.

My plaintain chips come in a green shiny bag.

Buzz Lightyear is a little bit green and not as shiny as he used to be.

One of my many favorite spoons is shiny and green too.

My neighbour is torturing me. Its not fair to pick on poor people who are in pain. Every time I go by my window there it is. I haunts my thoughts. Its down right cruel and unusual punishment. A Rare Shmoo

I have four cats. This picture is a rare glimpse of the Shmoo. She is skitish.....a skitaShmoo if you will. My BFF has only seen her a couple of times and for the longest time was convinced she didn't exist. She is an odd kitty. She likes to hide but hunts well. If you pat her she will drool on you. She is never seen out of my bedroom unless the house is quiet or she is hungry. Lucky for her I spend a lot of time in bed....she makes a great hot water bottle. Her mother was killed by the dogs on the farm and I hand raised her and her siblings. The siblings I found homes for but little Shmoo got to stay. Enjoy....you may never see her again!

Meet Ben. He was adopted off of Kijiji, from a woman in Mt.Brydges. She loved him very much and cried when she dropped him off. Wherever she is I hope she knows he is fine and is loved. Ben is wonderful. He knows that once the kids are in bed I will sit with him, and that I am a sucker for a cute face and will hand out carrots like candy.

Taking pictures of Ben is terribly difficult! I am going to have to practice cuz unless he is being patted he tends to throw his head from side to side and I get a great shot of a cage with a blur in it. Sigh.

Speaking of cages, Ben lives on fleece pads with towels sewed on underneath. He's a 'green' guinea pig as he has washable pads and recycles used kleenex boxes as hay holders. If he doesn't like the colour of his box he will shred them....but there are always more kleenex boxes! Also note he has his own rubber ducky floating in his water dispenser so his half blind mom can always tell how much water he has.

I don't like to wash dishes. It is my least favorite chore. I have no dishwasher, so I spend long periods of time at my sink. A couple of weeks ago I bought cheap dish soap. Ohh you know the stuff. You're in the aisle pondering the new scents and bottle shapes when you spot the store brand which is twice the size of everything else and half the price. Just like the store brand ketchup after one use you would be willing to pay with large amounts of money to undo the choice you made. Don't let the pretty colour and suds fool you, its crappy. The suds won't last. The grease stays on. The swearing commences.....

Is a massive amount of snow! This was last night.

This was noon today.

Then there was a large crash as all the snow came sliding off the roof shaking the whole place like an earthquake. Or seeing as this is Strathroy...like a freight train ;) No worries a few more hours and it will build up again! On that note our plow guy hasn't shown up at all today but I have been enjoying watching my neighbours dig. And dig. And dig. I haven't seen any kids out, its even too snowy to play! California Dreamin.....

Sirens and Snowballs

After the kids were in bed something must have happened on our street. There were lights flashing like the aliens had landed. I looked out to find 3 Police cars and 3 Firetrucks out front. They must have checked things out and declared an all clear because the firemen had a snowball fight out front. It was highly entertaining. When they were packing up to go I snapped a pic of the side view out my window. Notice the cats were watching too!

Sparklers and Snowflakes

The kids and I ended out 2009 with homemade pizza. DD had to have extra black olives, but I really missed the green ones. DS made and ate his own pizza and salad (its a freakin miracle!). The highlight of their night is always the sparklers I saved from Canada Day. I did my best to get them to stand still for a picture and love the way the snowflakes showed up. That wasn't the only thing that showed up tho...check out this last picture! The sparklers were a long way away so there was no smoke, and I snapped another picture right after and there was nothing in that one......spoooky!!!!! (also something rather normal in my life) Do you see a face too or is it just me? What an awesome way to start this project!

I couldn't resist wrapping my retro sunburst clock in some lights. This was my fav decoration this year. It has served as a night light, and hasn't been unplugged in two weeks.....love it!!!!!!!!! Picture was taken after midnight Christmas Eve...or is that Christmas morning? Either way Santa had just left and I was so tired, but still inspired to take a pic.
